Lowdown
In 1891 Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical educator instructor had invented basketball. The need to play a game indoors during the winter, for the YMCA students at Springfield Massachusetts gave birth to basketball. History witnessed a breakthrough when the retrieval of ball from peach baskets ended and open-ended nets were introduced. Initially the points were scored by landing the ball in the basket, later it evolved into a ‘Goal’ when the players shot the ball down the net.

The rules of this game are very easy. It is primarily played between 2 teams each consisting of 5 players. The modern day basket, a hoop, is fixed up at an altitude of 10 feet having a diameter measuring anywhere between 450-459mm. The teams have to fling the ball into the basket which secures them a goal. The team with the highest score is the winner. This is an indoor game hence played in a court with a dimension measuring, 28m in length and 15m width.
The game offers you a thrilling 40 minutes of intense precision and target oriented strategies, which are split into 4 quarters of 10 minutes each. A regular shot from open play scores 2 points with an additional one point awarded for a successive free throw. A shot from distance scores a high 3 points which is determined by throwing the ball from the marked ‘three-point line’ which is 6.75, from the net.
A preliminary round of the game shall take place for both the men and women teams at the Olympics where the 12 teams shall be split into 2 groups of 6. Every team shall be challenged against every other team in the group. The time to watch out for is that of a ‘Shot clock’ which measures the time from the last shot. The ball has to touch the rim of the net or at least pass through it in 24 seconds else the ball is automatically goes in possession of the opposition team.The cream of the teams, the chosen 8, shall qualify from the preliminary stage to the knockout one. The gold medal match is one to watch out for where both the top winners of the semi-final round give a super final‘Dunk’ (one or 2 handed slam down the net directly) only to evolve as a winner at the end!
